Most people choose who to work with based on the wrong things. Credentials. Reputation. Experience.
These are real signals. They tell you someone has done the work long enough to be accountable for it. What they can’t tell you is whether the work will actually move the needle for you. Fifteen years in, three variables consistently predict whether this kind of work creates sustainable change, and they apply almost universally. Miss any one and the others can’t compensate.
She didn’t simply end up with her life back together. She found a way through and ended up somewhere far beyond what she thought to aim for. That’s what I mean by moving the needle. Here’s how it happened.
A professional woman reached out to me several years ago. Business owner. Skilled at her work. She had read the books, listened to the podcasts, talked to other professionals. Nothing had landed. She knew she was stuck and she hated admitting it. She was also fairly certain that talking to me was going to be a waste of time.
She reached out anyway.

Access
The greatest skill and experience are worthless if you can’t meaningfully connect.
Access is the presence of real conditions, not just availability. She had access to information, to frameworks, to every form of self-directed help available. What she didn’t have was access to someone who could actually meet her in the place she was stuck.
When our schedules aligned and she made the call, it began creating the conditions for everything that followed. It’s the container everything else depends on. Not just scheduling. Whether the conditions are actually in place for something real to happen. Privacy. Presence. Enough space to go somewhere without stopping short. Creating that container is the first responsibility of this work, and it belongs to both of us.

Trust
You can have all the access in the world. If the connection isn’t honest and safe, nothing meaningful will come of it.
Trust here means the specific quality of honesty that becomes possible when someone is truly safe and more curious about you than you are about yourself.
She passed her own vibe check quickly. Within the first conversation she could tell this wasn’t going to be someone who would sit with her in self-pity, validate everything she already believed, and send her home feeling temporarily better. That mattered to her.
What took longer was the deeper layer. She came in certain she knew what her problems were. She had a clear diagnosis of herself and a clear list of what needed to change. The only thing that complicated her certainty was that none of it had worked. All that self-awareness, all those efforts, and she hadn’t moved. If anything, things had gotten worse.
Over time she began to notice something. I was more curious about her than she was about herself. Not in a probing clinical way. Just genuinely interested in the full picture, including the parts she had decided weren’t relevant or had long since written off. She began to trust it. And as she trusted it, a different quality of honesty became possible. Not the honesty she was already practicing, which was sharp, self-critical and relentless. A different kind. Slower. Closer to what was actually true.
When this level of trust is genuinely present, people say what actually needs to be said. The work that follows is different in kind, not just degree.

Motivation
You can have access and genuine trust and still not create sustainable change. The missing variable is motivation, and most people rarely think to take its full pulse. What someone says brought them to the room is often only part of the picture.
She came in wanting to get her life back together. Business. Health. Forward momentum. She wanted, as she put it, to stop getting in her own way and get her life back.
That motivation was real. So was the one underneath it.
As we stayed close to what was actually driving her, a different picture emerged. She was exhausted. Not the kind that sleep fixes. She had tried hard for a long time, and the people around her had let her down, and then genuinely unpredictable things, the kind nobody controls, dismantled the rest. Underneath the drive to get back on her feet was an equally powerful current running in the opposite direction. She was angry. Deeply disappointed. And some part of her had quietly decided that trying hard was a setup. That it could all be taken away again. So what was the point of getting her life in order yet again. The hidden motivation kept canceling the stated one.
That current was invisible to her. But it was the reason that no matter how clear her stated goals were, no matter how hard she worked toward them, she couldn’t hold the momentum.
The work shifted. Not away from her goals but underneath them. She needed, before anything else, the space to actually grieve. The accumulated losses, the fresh ones, the chronic disappointment, the existential dread that control was always a fairytale. Not to dwell in it but to move through it honestly rather than around it. That was the path, and she was furious about it. Which was also part of it.
As she moved through that, something unexpected happened. She said to me once, almost as a complaint: I know all of this has been important, and I’ve found more enjoyment in my life than I knew how to before. But damn it, I want to get my business going again. I love my work.
She heard herself say it in real time. Not “I have to work” or “I should do better” or “I need to prove something.” I want to. Because I love it. And I’m willing to go after it even knowing how unpredictable life can be.
That was the moment the third variable cleared. Not because the competing motivation disappeared but because it had finally been seen. And from that place, her original stated goals became uniquely possible. Quickly. With a momentum that surprised her.
She didn’t end up simply back on her feet. She ended up somewhere she hadn’t thought to aim for. She truly found a way through, not simply around. Enjoying her work more than before. More capable of handling the unpredictable things that continued to happen. In a genuinely different relationship with herself, not the coercive critical one she had arrived with, but something with more honesty and more room in it.
That’s what happens when all three variables are working.

Why All Three
Access without trust or motivational clarity: the conditions exist but nothing real gets said. The relationship stays on the surface because honesty without safety doesn’t go anywhere.
Trust without access: real understanding with no room to use it. The insight quietly starves.
Access and trust without motivational curiosity: something genuine and valuable gets built. People feel understood, sometimes for the first time. But sustainable change stays out of reach because the hidden motivations are still running the show, unseen.
All three. The only version that holds.
I do everything I can to maintain all three, not just to see clearly what’s difficult to see from the inside, but to be with you while you make it real.
When all three variables are in place, the work goes further than most people expect.
That’s where we start.
